Reclaiming Academic Sovereignty
Nigeria’s National Summit on Open Access Book Publishing
This national summit that brings together authors, editors, librarians, university leaders, funders, and policymakers to advance a coordinated, community-led framework for Open Access (OA) book publishing in Nigeria.
Theme: From Pilots to Policy – The event bridges TETFund-supported Academic Publishing Centers (APCs)—traditionally focused on print—with the BookHub initiative, supported by the Open Book Collective (OBC), which has piloted digital-first, open-source collaborative publishing through workshops at FUTMinna and UNILAG .
Strategic Alignment - The summit offers an opportunity to explore how BookHub could serve as a core component of the evolving TERAS ecosystem supporting digital publishing infrastructure that aligns with shared national priorities for equity, sustainability, and global visibility.
What to Expect - With a focus on Diamond OA (no author or reader fees), the programme features:
- Keynotes from national and international leaders
- Demonstrations of collaborative publishing platforms
- Hands-on workshops on metadata and editorial workflows
- Policy sprints aimed at national OA adoption

This hands-on workshop, hosted by the Academic Publishing Centre - South-West at the University of Lagos and supported by Datasphir and the BookHub Stakeholder Advisory Committee (SAC), is the first of a series of workshops that aim to:
- Promote collaborative authoring using the BookHub open-source platform.
- Build capacity in open access (OA) book development across disciplines.
- Expand the national conversation on OA book publishing from FUTMinna Academic Publishing Centre (North-Central) to the Southwest.
- Support the production of peer-reviewed, high-quality, openly licensed academic books authored by Nigerian scholars.

This course covers the FUTMinna Campus Workshop on Open Access (OA) Publishing, aimed at fostering OA awareness and strengthening the Academic Publishing Centre (APC) at FUTMinna. Participants will gain hands-on training on the BookHub platform, engage in discussions about OA policies, and collaborate on advancing open access publishing in Nigerian universities.
